About the Author
I have always dreamed of becoming a writer, and wrote many stories as a child, to now be embarking on a journey to become a published author is incredibly exciting. I am so humbled by everyone’s support and so thankful to everyone who gets involved in this journey with me, by purchasing the books or products or just by following along on socials or signing up to the email list, it all helps. I am a single mum, who has juggled many jobs and had many lives. Recently deciding enough was enough and to take charge of my own future and do something that my kids can be involved in. I have two primary school aged kids who are the inspiration behind my first two books. To leave this legacy for them is why I am here and why I am doing this, with the hopes to inspire other mums to follow their dreams and to also inspire children with my books.
My Australian Flower Garden
This book is written in summary of my daughter Kiara, my little nature lover with a love of all things flowers, bees and craft. This book takes the readers on a mum and daughters’ journey to do something positive for the planet and create an Australian flower garden. Learning about Australian Native plants and bees along the way. With the aim to inspire young ones everywhere to create their own gardens and foster a love for nature.
Nixon the Numbat
My second book was written with my son Nixon in mind. Exploring how young ones can feel big emotions and discover different tools they can practice to help them stay calm. Introducing Nixon as a Numbat, an endangered Australian native animal to young readers. Nixon the Numbat visits his Aussie animal mates and asks them, ‘how do you stay calm?’ Each animal giving Nixon a unique calming tool or technique to practice. A beautiful picture book for young readers to learn different tools, explore what works for them and shining a light on all our favourite Aussie animals!
About the Books
My Australian Flower Garden, will be the first Children’s picture book, self-published by Alyce Young, available mid 2024. Followed by Nixon the Numbat, and hopefully many more.
Meet the Illustrator
I am so excited to introduce you to my amazing illustrator for ‘My Australian Flower Garden.’ Sam from Smith Ink has actually been my tattooist for many years meeting back in 2018 when I got my first tattoo with her, soon discovering I will never go anywhere else!
I already had her in mind to illustrate this book knowing our shared love for nature but then when she reached out first when she heard about my project, well the rest is history!
Here is what she has to say.
‘Hello, I’m Sam! Mum of two and illustrator of Alyce Young’s upcoming children’s book ‘My Australian Flower Garden’. Though I have many artistic pursuits (tattooing, pottery, crocheting, plant clipping propagator, crystal collector and thrift stall shopper extraordinaire) illustrating holds the most special place in my heart as it’s where my inner child shines brightest and brings back all the nostalgic feelings of my childhood; getting lost in the magical pages of stories by the classics May Gibbs, Beatrix Potter and Cicely Mary Barkers flower fairies!
As soon as I heard this book was about Australian natives and doing something positive for the planet I could not contain my excitement or say no to this amazing opportunity.
I have since been daydreaming about taking my daughters to the library (a weekly tradition I’ve been doing since my eldest was 4 weeks old 😂 why wasn’t I at home resting!?) and holding this book in my hands! The thought makes me feel so grateful and a little sentimental really, not just for the full circle moment, but for the fact that two mammas, who’s ’to do lists’ really didn’t need extra tasks 😅, said “heck it, imma make the time because this idea is that good that it needs to be bought to fruition”.
